Harry McGuire praised Marcus Rashford while calling for Man United to improve to ensure fourth place
Harry Maguire believes Marcus Rashford’s burgeoning confidence can fire him towards the Premier League golden boot and carry Manchester United into a top-four finish. Two goals from the striker in – one from open play and another from the penalty spot – helped deliver a comfortable 4-0 victory over an abject Norwich.
And having already surpassed his previous best top-flight tally of 10 goals by four, Maguire backed his team-mate to aim for the summit this season.
“I’m pleased for him this year that he is starting to get the goals he deserves and hopefully he has not stopped yet,” said Maguire. “He has a few more in the tank from now until the end of the season.”
Having inched into double figures for the first time in four campaigns last season with 10 goals, Rashford could more than double that this season.
And while a figure in the mid-20s might be needed to land gold, the striker’s confident display – unleashing a box of tricks in a dazzling display – bodes well for the remainder of the season.
“He’s a top player with top quality and I think it is really important that you can enjoy yourself when you are playing well and winning games,” said Maguire.
“I can remember one of the first sessions when I went to train with England he really stood out to me there – his ability on the ball and technique. He has everything to go and have a career at the highest level.”
Whether United are headed in a similar direction remains to be seen for all that they had little trouble easing past a staggeringly passive display from a team which seems in danger of accepting its fate with four months to go.
Goals from Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood were enough to beat Delia Smith’s pride and joy who fashioned one decent chance from Todd Cantwell which David De Gea saved low to his left.
