The network revealed earlier this year that it would be launching its 5G service in October and that month has now arrived.
When this superfast signal is switched on in a few weeks time it will mean users will be able to download files and browse the web at a much quicker rate.
In fact, in recent tests performed by Express.co.uk using a rival 5G network we were able to experience downloads at over 300Mbps – that’s around seven-times faster than most fixed-line home broadband.
“5G is going to be a game changer for our country. Whether it’s for people or businesses, the power of this next-generation network is going to unlock a world of possibilities for our economy and society,” said Mark Evans, CEO, Telefónica UK.
“We’re also giving our customers maximum flexibility with our industry-leading custom plans, letting people adopt 5G at a time that’s right for them.”
More news on a full rollout and pricing is expected soon but this new 5G service now means O2 is finally able to rival the other UK networks.
With O2 now joining the party, it should mean more users will be able to access and use this futuristic technology.
Before you get too excited, it is worth noting that you will need a 5G-ready smartphone to take advantage of the speeds.
Many manufacturers including Samsung, LG, OnePlus and Huawei have released these cutting-edge devices in recent months and more are expected to arrive soon.
We’ll bring you full news on O2’s 5G launch as soon as we hear more but even those who aren’t interested in this new technology are being treated to a bonus.
